He outlines immigrants’ rights and pledges to defend sanctuary laws.

On Monday, New York Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani shared a video on social media reaffirming that he will protect immigrants and informing them of their rights in the event of a raid by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

“Last weekend, ICE attempted to carry out a raid on Canal Street and detain our immigrant neighbors. As mayor, I will protect the rights of every New Yorker. And that includes the more than 3 million immigrants who call this city home,” he said.

“We can all stand up to ICE if you know your rights. ICE cannot enter private spaces — such as your home, your school or a private area of your workplace — without a judicial warrant signed by a judge,” the 34-year-old Democrat added.

“Sometimes ICE will show you documents that look like a warrant and tell you they have the right to arrest you. That is false. ICE is legally permitted to lie to you, but you have the right to remain silent,” Mamdani continued, as he showed different types of legal documents in the video.

The New York mayor-elect also said that residents may record ICE agents as long as doing so does not interfere with an arrest.

“New Yorkers have the constitutional right to protest. And when I am mayor, we will protect that right. New York will always welcome immigrants, and I will fight every day to protect, support and celebrate our immigrant brothers and sisters,” concluded Mamdani, who will take office on Jan. 1.

Previously, the mayor-elect had defended sanctuary laws that protect immigrants during a meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump in November. “What I told the president is that sanctuary laws include a provision that allows the city to work with the federal government on a specific set of serious crimes,” said the politician from the socialist wing of the Democratic Party.

“What deeply concerns New Yorkers and me is that ICE’s immigration enforcement efforts have not focused on those serious crimes. They have focused on children as young as six being detained and deported — New Yorkers whose apparent offense is simply being here in New York City,” Mamdani said.

Mamdani said his commitment to “public safety” is to keep all New Yorkers safe, and that this is where Trump and he had “different views,” but he told the president “honestly” and “directly” that he follows the law, “and the law also means defending immigrants.”
